Home Sweet Home

I love where we live.

I know I've said it before but I am so thankful for the clarity John and I had when we decided to move back to Kingwood.  I grew up here.  John grew up here. Our parents are here.  Our hearts are here.  I can honestly say when I am running around town living life it just feels right.

I am also so happy to raise our kiddos here.  One of my favorite things to do is go on a "greenbelt adventure."  The twins love it too.  We walked these trails for two hours this morning.  I immensely enjoyed watching George and Clara explore, run, and laugh.  Such beauty in a day like today.  Perfection.

Uncle Jay

It is hard to believe a year and a half ago my brother underwent major surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pancreas.  I will never forget the day that I heard the "C" word over the phone from my brother.  It is as if your world stops spinning.  The walls around you come tumbling down.  Especially when he is given such grim statistics....a 5% chance of living a year.  Pancreatic cancer is usually a death sentence.  I call those first few weeks of hearing the news suffocating.  I could never quite catch my breath.

Through all those scary days when we were waiting for answers, trying to get a plan of action together, and praying like I've never prayed before, my brother was strong.  Insanely strong.  His attitude was that this wasn't HIS death sentence.  He had a whole lot of living to do.  He was going to kick cancer butt.  The opposite outcome wasn't an option.  Jay's strength through it all was what got the rest of us through it.  As we were holding him up in his time of need, he was holding us up in ours.  I guess that is how family works.

The surgery to remove the tumor was a big one.  In the end Jay would lose part of his pancreas, intestine and stomach.  Six hours into Jay's major surgery I convinced my parents to go get a bite to eat in the cafeteria.  I would stay back in case we got any updates.  The phone in the waiting room rang. They called out our last name.  I walked to the phone to hear a cheery nurse say, "We got it all."  The best four words I think I have ever heard in my life.  The best news I've ever gotten to tell my parents.  That was the start to Jay's recovery.  His optimism and fighting spirit prevailed.

Last week Jay came home for his routine six month scan.  It's always a little tense around here until we hear the results.  He calls his CT scans "drinking the electric lemonade and riding the white lightening."  The guy's sense of humor never lets up.  The news was amazing.  No signs of cancer.  Let me repeat...NO SIGNS OF CANCER.  They even pushed his next scan until a year out.  I am beyond thankful to the doctors, to my brother's fighting spirit, and to God.  God has blessed us with the gift of my brother.  I know I will walk through life with him by my side and words can't express what that means to me.

His visits are always wonderful.  I love watching him play with George and Clara.  He spoils us with wonderful meals.  We laugh a lot.  I admire so many things about my brother and he will always be an inspiration to me.  We love you Uncle Jay!  Keep kicking cancer butt!

September 11, 2011

We had a busy day in the Hadjioannou house on the 11th of September.  Probably the thing most on our minds was the ten year anniversary of the attacks of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the plane that went down in Pennsylvania.  I personally felt like I had a heavy heart all day.  The sounds of the names of those who died being read aloud that morning on TV, the countless times we heard Taps or Amazing Grace, and the repeat of the footage from that day were all grim reminders of all that was lost.  A day that for many felt like hell on Earth.  Americans' lives changed forever that day.  We won't ever forget it or forget those that have fought for our freedom since.  May God bless America.

The anniversary of all of that sadness was also a day of celebration in the US.  It was Grandparent's Day!  George and Clara have four amazing grandparents in their lives so we had to celebrate them.  We made a photo album of pictures of the twins from each month they've been here on this Earth blessing our days.  We made a surprise visit to Grandma and Grandpa H's house in the morning.  We had dinner with Grammy and Pop-pop Q at our house that evening.  We are so lucky to have such amazing grandparents in our lives.  I saw a onesie the other day that made me laugh but was very true.  It read, "Mom's cranky? Dad's not home? Call 1-800-Grandma."  What would we do without grandparents?!?!

You might have noticed someone special in this picture.  Uncle Jay came to visit to have his latest scan.  It was so wonderful to have the whole family home together.  The twins loved having Uncle Jay around.

September 11th was also the first Texans game of the season.  We had to dress up to support our favorite football team.  Jake came over to watch the game with Daddy while George and Clara napped.  The Texans got the season off to a great start by beating the Colts!

Go Texans!!

22 Months! Stories that make Mommy smile.

At night, the twins get to pick a book or two to bring to bed with them.  They usually look at it before falling asleep and when they wake up in the morning.  Sometimes I find George in his crib in the morning with his two stuffed animals, blue the longhorn and blue the dog, sitting in front of him as he "reads" (babbles) them a story.  It is so sweet!

Clara has become quite the singer.  We have a favorite TV show now that is on the Disney Channel.  The twins never really paid attention to many shows before but Imagination Movers grabbed their attention.  They love this show which is full of music and all about problem solving.  Even when we aren't watching this fun show I hear Clara babbling the tune getting a few words right.  Quite adorable!

George and Clara now put their stuffed animals in time out.  They tell them "No!" and put them in the correct corner.  If I ask what they are in time out for the answer is usually hitting.  When the time out is finished, George and Clara make the stuffed animals apologize by hugging.  Hilarious and yet so interesting to know that in due time everything that happens in this house will most likely be shared with the rest of the world.

While the twins' language skills seem to be developing at a lightening fast rate, so is their twin language.  They will stand or sit next to each other and babble up a storm making strong eye contact.  They will both laugh at the same time, run off at the same time, or even do the same hand movements.  The other day they seemed to be discussing hairstyles.   George would babble babble babble and then reach out to straighten Clara's hair.  Then Clara would babble babble babble and reach out to mess up George's hair.  It is so interesting to watch.  Too bad I can't get in the conversation.

George is into all things construction right now.  Our little town (and most of Texas) has been in a serious drought this summer.  The drought has caused many water mains to break and also our streets to crack and shift.  It's a little crazy.  Because of all of these issues, we've had lots of construction equipment around.  George's favorite by far...the digger.  If we pass one, I make sure to slow down so he can see the digger in all its yellow glory.  As soon as we pass the construction zone, George usually says he wants more, more, more!  Sorry buddy.  Mommy can't make diggers appear for your enjoyment.  Although it is pretty cool that you think I can.  :)

Clara is a summersaulting queen!  One night when we were at my parents' house for dinner she was trying to do a summersault (aka forward roll).  Grammy Quinn gave her a little nudge and over she went to thunderous applause from the peanut gallery.  Of course this little sweetheart loves attention so we've been witnessing summersaults on a daily basis since.  It is great that she can do it all by herself now!

Since George successfully mastered climbing...on everything.  He has now moved on to jumping...off everything.  We were hanging out in our media room and George climbed up on the couch and then up on the arm of the couch.  I stared in astonishment as he slowly stood up on the arm of the couch and kept his balance.  Then the little bugger jumped off onto the cushions of the couch!  What!?!  I was so shocked I don't think I said a word until he started climbing up to do the whole thing again.  Now he tries to jump off everything.  He climbed up on a bench, which is pretty high and sitting on hardwood floors, in our family room.  I was in the kitchen and I hear, "Un, Ooo, Eee...Ump!"  I got to him as soon as he was about to take a flying leap and possibly break an arm.  Yeesh!  He is only allowed to jump off the bottom stair onto the floor.  I know we are such boring parents.  The cute part is we taught him how to stand up and say, "Ta Da!" after he jumps.

Clara has unfortunately learned from her Mommy to tell someone to move.  She hears Mommy tell our doggy Bailey to "mooovvvveee" out of the way.  Now Clara will stand next to me and put her weight on my legs and say "Moooovvvveeee!"  I sigh knowing this is all my fault.  Teach this child some manners!  I am working on adding the word please to the end of that request.  Then we will work on her lovely voice tone. Hope she catches on!

There are some books that are favorites in this house.  George's favorite is Where the Wild Things Are.  It is one of my favorite children's books too so I don't mind reading about 100 times a day.  One day when we were reading the story I got to the last page where the final line reads, "And it was still hot."  I started reading the line "And it was still..." but didn't get to finish because George beat me to it.  He happily said, "Hot!"  I was so impressed by my little man's memory.  He does this with other stories now too.  It surprises me every time.

Grandma and Grandpa Hadjioannou watched Clara and George a few weeks back while we went to a friend's wedding in Indiana.  When we came home I noticed Clara added a Greek word to her vocabulary....Opa!  Grandma and Grandpa Hadjioannou say Opa a lot and it was only a matter of time before someone picked it up.  She sounds absolutely adorable exclaiming, "Opa!"  Obviously she is connecting to her Greek roots at an early age.

Most weeks John works late at least one night.  My parents are awesome and always tell me to bring the kids over so I don't have to deal with the insanity of cooking and keeping an eye on the kiddos alone.  This week when we were finished dinner I thought I smelled a dirty diaper.  I turned to Clara and asked, "Are you stinky?"  She was silent.  I asked both of them, "Who is stinky?"  Clara answered, "Pop-pop!"and pointed to my Dad.  We all cracked up!  She thought she was quite hilarious too.

The twins are so fun and I love watching them learn.  They are like little sponges and seem to soak up the world.  They love to explore and try new things.  They think up new ways to use everything...including their stroller!  This is such a great time in their little lives and I am having so much fun witnessing it!

First Day of School

George and Clara started Mother's Day Out (MDO) today.  Last night I got all of their things ready for the big day and as I was packing their lunches I got a little nervous.  What if they hate it?  What if they cry the whole time?  What if they don't eat?  You know, all those insane things Mommies worry about.  We woke up this morning, ate breakfast, got ready, played outside, and headed to MDO.

The nerves came back on the drive over and John didn't help matters much by asking me every few minutes if I was okay.  The twins were excited about it.  For the past few days we've been talking it up and telling them how fun it would be and that we were going to leave but we would be back.  When we got there Clara was excited to see all the other kids.  She was waving to everyone. This girl cracks me up!  We headed into the classroom, greeted their teachers, and followed the morning routine.  Once they were all set up, we watched them start playing with the cars together.  They seemed comfortable so we kissed them goodbye and told them we would be back.  I was shocked that they just kept on playing.  We walked out of the classroom and heard no screaming.  I thought to myself, "I guess they are alright" and breathed a sigh of relief.  As John and I were walking out we saw another Mommy crying on her husband's shoulder after leaving her little one at MDO.  I guess the separation anxiety goes both ways sometimes.  Here are some photos of the kiddos this morning and in their classroom:

Getting settled in the classroom.

Hoping for a good day!

John and I went to Starbucks and enjoyed a coffee outside.  We ran some errands, went home to do some housework, and then went out to lunch.  I have to say it was strangely quiet during the day.  Something for me to get used to.  I also have to say I can see my life getting a little easier with MDO.  I know I will be able to get things done around the house and run errands while they are having fun at school.

When we picked the twins up the teachers said they were fantastic.  They didn't cry at all when we left.  They participated in the activities, ate their snack/lunch, and played well.  The only time during the day where they cried was nap time.  This is a regular occurrence at home too.  George took a short nap and Clara didn't sleep at all, but overall a successful first day of school!  I hope Thursday goes as smoothly!

Happy 31s Birthday Daddy!

We celebrated John's birthday this past weekend with friends and family.  We had a Mexican fiesta at our house and enjoyed the time spent with everyone!  Thanks for celebrating with us!
